Dimension of the Early Child published an article for teachers and educators explaining the importance of talking with young children as a means of encouraging learning. Everything teachers (and parents) say to a child can influence what the child learns. It is therefore important to ensure that conversation with young people is purposeful and productive, both in the classrooms and at home. The article explores the various areas of development that meaningful conversation fosters such as early literacy, cognitive functioning, social skills and high quality talk. The article then explains in detail how conversation can be included in classroom learning in an effective manner. What is also interesting is that most of the techniques and suggestions can be implemented in the home as well and across multiple contexts.
Let's set aside time to have meaningful conversation with our young children and do our part in fostering healthy development.
